What was decided

The majority voted in favour of a motion to agree with the bill's main idea. In parliamentary jargon, they voted to read the bill for a second time.

What is the bill's main idea?

According to the explanatory memorandum, which is a political document created by the party introducing the bill (in this case, the Government):

The amendments contained in the Treasury Laws Amendment (More Cost of Living Relief) Bill 2025 will deliver further cost-of-living relief.

The Government is delivering new tax cuts to every Australian taxpayer from 1 July 2026, in addition to the first round of tax cuts that have been rolling out since 1 July 2024.

The Government is also increasing the Medicare levy low-income thresholds to ensure Australians on lower incomes will continue to be exempt from paying the Medicare levy or pay a reduced rate.
